Rhetorical Precis

In Adam Winkler's op ed that is called "Why banning assault rifles won't reduce gun violence"(2016), he advocates that eliminating assault weapons will not reduce gun violence. The author first argues that people mistaken the fact that machine guns were used in San Bernardino attack, by counterclaiming that there were no machine weapons involved; he then compares hand guns with firearms by stating that they both contain the same amount of lethality; and to conclude he claims that there are different ways to approach the issue of gun control by suggesting that simple background checks and investigating gun deals would reduce the gun violence. His purpose is to proclaim that gun control laws are not appropriate, in order to resolve and end gun crime and deaths, He seems to have a political audience in mind because he does not agree with laws that will do no affect on the safety of gun violence.

Summary: In the political Cartoon by Nate Beeler "Mass Shootings"(2015)published by The Cagle Post, the topic of regulating gun control is presented. Gun Control laws are failing to keep us safe from violence, such as mass shootings. Congress has not yet realized that damage Mass shootings brings to people, yet there's so little we can do to comfort the families that have suffered, since no progress is being made.
Analysis:  Tragedies such as the San Bernardino mass shooting has caused an uprising movement to begin improving gun control laws. Since it is easily to purchase a gun, it is easy to be harmed by this gun. Maybe all the mass shootings could've been prevented if there were better gun control laws. Having stricter rules to posses a gun,  is the first step in creating a safer community. The picture illustrate's a gun labeled with "mass shootings" going towards a thin net that is labeled "gun control". The reason why the net is so thin, is to represent the thin progress of gun control. So little progress is being made and the holes from the net are allowing the bullet to go inside and hurting the people and their family. The chaotic damage is shown with the fire cloud in back of the bullet, indicating that the bullet itself holds a destructive effect. The picture itself explains a clear representation of mass shootings and gun control, since the author labeled the gun and the net. The predicament is clearly shown to the audience as well, because of the thin net that represents gun control. The thin net cannot protect everyone from violence, especially mass shootings. After gun tragedies occur, there is not much that can be done. The emotional pain the families go through, hurt the president because there is so little he can do. All he can do is wait for congress to come into an agreement, but still has not yet to fixed gun violence.

Gun Control Regulations

Summary:
In the article "End the Gun Epidemic in America", published by The New York Times, the author proclaims how Americas elected leaders are taking no further step to regulate gun control. It has now became easier to buy a gun with no restrictions. The author announces to the audience to take the step to regulate, giving up their weapons is the first step to help create a safer environment.

Analysis: Since our "leaders" are profiting from the purchase of weapons, no further restrictions made to stop a purchase that puts thousands at risk. The author recalls that we hear news about mass shootings frequently. Sure our government pays their respects of the victims who suffered, but does not do further more. Gun control can easily reduce the mass shootings. To connect his proclaim, the author connects to our world now. We have elections coming in, but there seems to be no one that mentions the act of gun regulation. It won't matter who gets elected because the fear of getting killed by someone who has a weapon is still there. There are other counties like France, England, and Norway that are trying to address the act to start gun control, but the US remains doing nothing. The author then blames republicans for advocating gun markets and claims that instead of talking about the spread of firearms, we should talk about the spread of gun markets because the firearms come from gun markets. To end the article, the author then suggests another idea on. The author reaches a message to those who do own a fire arm/weapon, should be considerate and eliminate them.

Argument Essay

Our world today no longer lives in a world of simplicity due to our advanced mechanization.. People no longer focus on self-sufficiency, and focus on living the life of luxury. People have grown in a world where they seek competition with each other, rather than helping their neighbor out. In “Where I lived and what I lived for” Thoreau addresses his values of living a life of simplicity by living a life alone in the woods, free from everyone else. By advocating the life Thoreau argues, our world would promote a life full of leisure and free from obligations. No rush, no competition,no materialism, just a free flowing life.
Before technology boomed in the 1920’s, people communicated simply by talking to each other. There was no competition to have the best life. Now, it seems as if people rush into buying the best of the best to promote an image of superiority. Thoreau's rhetorical question, “why should we live with such hurry and waste of life?” indicates that people are not taking the time to acknowledge the essence of life and rushing into a life of luxury.

On the other hand, individuals who reject Thoreau’s ideal of simplicity, argue that mechanization is what will help us simplify our lives. Machinery has helped by doing the job for us. So because machinery does the job, people have nothing to worry about, which leads to a free life. But little do they know that because people depend too much on the machinery and become distracted from each other. Thoreau states “let us spend one day as deliberately as Nature”, after he analyzed a life of leisure. People do not necessary need the machinery, they are capable of doing the job themselves. Machinery holds back knowledge, people need to nourish.

Gun Control Reducing Suicide

alal al-khatib wrote an article about the study of owning a gun increasing the number of suicide, the article goes by the name "Would Gun Control Reduce Suicides?"(February 27,2013); Discovery News. The writer reports the rates on how individuals who posses a gun will most likely harm themselves with that gun, giving the individual a higher chance of suicide. The sense of owning a gun already, gives the user an easy access to kill and harm.

Analysis; The author first introduces the fact that owning a gun  has resulted in high mass shootings and death rates. In order to support his statement, the author then adds statistics to show the amount of  gun violence in the previous year. The entire article consist of statistics to prove to the audience the harm guns have to offer. Then, the author portrays the methods of how some individuals "suicide" themselves, giving the reader a better understanding of how this can be done. Individuals who own a gun, have a gun at home, or have bought a gun, is mentioned and how these individuals are just simply exposed to a gun, they are immediately in danger in using the weapon on themselves; the author does this to reach to an audience that can relate to gun violence, and owning a gun. He aims to provide a message on the dangers of guns and to reach out to the media the message of improving Gun control. To do this, he mention's that when physiological ill veterans come back, they tend to end their lives easily with a gun because they posses one. Finally, he ends the article with a power quote; "Just slowing down gun access by a few minutes may be enough to stop the impulse.", to end his claim on how to reduce gun violence.

should gun control be a law?

Eric Bradner and Gregory Krieg, wrote an article about President Obama's battle for a better gun control policy, the article goes by the name "Emotional Obama calls for 'sense of urgency' to fight gun violence" (January 5,2016); CNN. President Obama is striving for better, non violence life in America;one goal he has to improve this is, is by having more elaborate background checks on individuals who sell guns. Although majority of Americans are in favor of this, republicans are not entirely in favor if this; which leaves Obama having to wait for the republicans to agree.
Analysis; In order to catch the audiences emotional appeal, Brandner and Krieg introduce the  reaction of the president from the tragic event of the massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school. The authors describe how the reaction of the president was when he talked about this in his speech. A video of the president wiping away his tears is placed after the first paragraph. This gives the audience a live imagery of what happened and the presidents frustration. The plans of what the president have in mind in order to improve gun control is discussed in the following paragraph. Therefore, gives the audience an explanation of what the president has in mind. The president proposes how he will do this, which is by improving background checks. If there were better background checks, tragedies like this would have been avoided. Finally, the author compares the views the republicans have on this, which not entirely supports the president. Finally,to show how determine the president is, the article ends by talking about how the president has other plans to help improve gun control, despite not having the republican's full vote.

Stacy schiff rhetorical précis

In Stacy schiff'S opinional article "Anger: An American History" (December18,2015), she portrays that "rabid xenophobia" doesn't really exist in the United States. The author first proposes the main question by quoting another authors opinion; then she compares the U.S now to that of before with historical allusions; and to conclude she justifies her opinion by utalizing irony. Her purpose is to speak out on immigration in order to demonstrate that America is not afraid of immigrants because so many of them are constantly coming in through the boarders. Schiff seems to have a political savvy audience in mind because she speaks out on current immigration issues.
